Ophthalmology

Examination

A thorough ocular examination is performed including an evaluation of your pet's vision. There is a gross evaluation of the eyelids and periocular tissues. Tear production and tear quality will be assessed and corneal stains including flourescein and rose bengal may be utilized. Irrigation of the nasolacrimal apparatus may be performed if indicated. Tonometry will be performed to evaluate your pet for glaucoma. All internal ocular structures are evaluated with slit lamp magnification (biomicroscopy) and the retina and optic nerve are evaluated with indirect ophthalmoscopy.

Testing

After the complete ocular examination, further recommended testing may include ocular ultrasonography, electroetinography, radiography, computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A number of laboratory tests may be recommended, especially if a systemic disease is suspected. We may recommend a consultation with other specialty departments if multiple body systems are involved.

Treatment

The doctor will discuss all treatment options including medical and/or surgical recommendations with you.

Surgical Treatment

MedVet provides surgical treatment of eyelid and periocular abnormalities, cornial diseases, intraocular tumors, cataracts with artificial lens implantation, vitreal abnormalities and retinal diseases. We also offer surgical treatment for glaucoma. We utilize the most advanced technology in providing surgical care, including the use of a carbon dioxide laser whenever possible to produce less postoperative swelling, bruising and pain.

Surgical Aftercare

The majority of eye patients are sent home the day of surgery with directions for their at-home nursing care. When more extensive care is required, such as with cataract surgery, the patient is hospitalized overnight. A re-evaluation schedule will be determined based on the procedure and the patient.
