Dentistry
Most people are aware of what constitutes proper plaque control and prevention of cavities in their mouths.
What most people don't know, however, is that the very same principles apply to our animal
companions. Commonly held myths are that animals don't get dental disease, or that if
fed only hard food, their oral health will be guaranteed. In fact, the most
commonly encountered disease in veterinary medicine is dental disease! It is
widely held that 70 to 80% of all pets over two years of age have some form
of dental disease that requires professional treatment.
Most often, this is a form of periodontal disease, which is the most common cause of
halitosis (bad breath). However, pets are also subject to broken teeth, cavities
and orthodontic problems.
Dental disease is a cause of discomfort to animals, even though they often mask their
pain. Once dental disease is appropriately treated, however, and the discomfort is alleviated,
many animals will seem to perk up and act as if they feel better. Thus, dental disease is
very much a health concern and a quality of life issue. The fortunate thing is that many dental diseases are at
least in part, preventable with adequate home and professional care.
