Drug (NSAID) Toxicity
Over-the-counter and prescription human and animal nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs) used for pain and headache management are common medications in the home. Some common
medications in this group include aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol®), ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®),
Carprofen (Rimadyl®), Etodolac (Etogesic®), Deracoxib (Deramaxx®), and Celebrex®. In addition, many
of these drugs are combined with other medications in cold and sinus remedies.
Many of these medications can have serious or fatal consequences if consumed by a species other than
that for which they were intended or if they are taken in amounts greater than recommended.
Side effects of over dosage or inappropriate use can be seen within 30 minutes of exposure
or delayed as long as 1-2 weeks. Cats are more sensitive to these medications than dogs and
can have much more severe problems ranging from serious illness to death from even a single
dose.
If you suspect that your pet has ingested any of these medications, or any other over-the-counter or
prescription medication, your pet should be seen by a veterinarian for evaluation as soon as possible.
If you are concerned, call National
Animal Poison Control at 1-800-548-2423.
